Bullteproof xB design,
January 10, 2007
By
Big Smith
from Lebanon TN
"My family purchased our first Scion xB in the summer as a replacement vehicle. My two teenage sons, one over 6'5, no longer fit in our Suzuki Vitara. Our criteria were, in order, 1) Had to fit the boys comfortably in the back seat and 2) better than average gas mileage.
The 2004 xB we found fit the bill. With more than 5" of space above the tallest son's head, the back seat was perfect. We consistently get over 30 MPG city and highway.
As a Toyota product, we had often wondered (hypothetically) how one of these "boxes" would survive a crash or flip accident. On 11/20 I found out.
Crossing an intersection with a green light, I was struck in the front passenger door by a small truck whose brakes failed. In an instant I was going backward down the same road, hanging from my seatbelt sliding along on the TOP of the xB.
With nothing to do but listen to the paint scrape off and hope no one was coming the other way, I rode it out. As soon as the scraping had stopped I was able to unfasten my seatbelt and drop to the ceiling and start looking for the door to get out. When helped from the car and able to look, I found that 1) I was totally unhurt and 2) the top of the xB had not folded or crumpled AT ALL. (After it was righted, I found that the top was almost entirely devoid of paint, but no structural collapse had occurred!).
We were so impressed with the car's survivability (the center of the impact, the door and center post on the passenger side had been pushed in about 10 inches) that we immediately started a search for a replacement xB. We now have an '05 xB and again are very pleased with comfort, fit and mileage. Great car, highly recommended for the busy, cost-conscious family."

BOX CAR CRAZE,
December 24, 2006
By

"I bought my very first new car in December of 2004. I looked at several different makes and models including the Ford Focus, Chevy Aveo, Volkswagon Bug, Kia and Hyundai models, and the Honda Element. I was almost ready to decide between the Aveo and the Hyundai Elantra when I decided to take a look at Toyota. The salesman asked me how much I wanted to spend, and when I mentioned that I want a car I could fit in he showed me the awesome Scion Xb. I stand just over 6 feet tall and weigh over 300 lbs. I couldn't belive how well I fit in it! I knew immediately that was the car for me. The only disappointment I found was the horse power. It has a 4 cylinder engine so you won't win any races in it, but you will save mucho dinero at the gas pump! I drove my car excessively because I was a pizza delivery driver. It was the perfect car for my job. I averaged 25 mpg in the city and about 35 mpg on the highway. Also, it only holds 10-11 gallons of gas when empty, so a fill-up should never be much over $20. The car is also surprisingly safe! Unfortunately my Scion Xb was totaled on October 19, 2006. I was rear-ended by someone driving a Ford Explorer. I must say I was impressed given the impact of the collision how well the car kept me from being injured. The safegaurds built in the design really paid off that day. At the time I had double the mileage that someone would expect to have normally, and the insurance claim adjuster told me that my car was still worth more than I owed on it! I couldn't bellieve it! I was glad because I didn't purchase the gap insurance. The car held its value very well."
